"What should we wear?" is the question I hear most before every family session. The good news: you don't need matching outfits or a brand-new wardrobe. You need a simple color plan, a few textures, and clothes your family can actually move in. Here's my guide as a Chicago family photographer.
Start with a color palette, not outfits
Pick two or three colors and build everyone's outfit from them. For fall and winter in Chicago, these palettes photograph beautifully:
-
Warm neutrals: cream, camel, rust, and soft brown
-
Cozy classic: ivory, navy, and burgundy
-
Soft and light: oatmeal, sage, and dusty blue
One person can wear the boldest color, and everyone else supports it.

Coordinate, don't match
Matching outfits can look stiff on camera. Instead, mix solids with one or two subtle patterns, like a small plaid or a soft floral, and vary the shades within your palette.

Add texture for depth
Texture is what makes fall and winter photos feel warm. Chunky knit sweaters, corduroy, wool coats, linen, and flowy dresses all add depth that flat cotton t-shirts can't.
Plan for Chicago weather
For outdoor sessions, bring coats that are part of the look, not an afterthought. Neutral wool coats, scarves, and beanies photograph well. Layer thin thermals underneath so kids stay warm and happy. For studio sessions, skip the bulky coats and focus on sweaters and dresses.
Dressing the kids
-
Choose comfortable clothes they can sit, run, and play in.
-
Avoid big logos, characters, and neon colors.
-
Pack a backup outfit for little ones, just in case.
-
Tights, knit sets, and soft cardigans work well for babies and toddlers.
What to avoid
-
Large logos or graphics
-
Very busy, high-contrast patterns
-
Neon or overly bright colors
-
Clothes that need constant adjusting
