Chicago winters don't have to put your family photos on hold. You have two great options: a cozy indoor studio session, or an outdoor session embracing the snow and city lights. Here's how they compare, so you can choose what fits your family.

Studio session Outdoor session
Weather No wind, cold or rain Depends on the day; dress warmly
Light Consistent, soft and flattering Changes with the season; best near midday in winter
Best for Babies, toddlers, newborns, holiday cards Snowy scenes, skyline views, adventurous families
Comfort Warm, private, room for breaks Shorter sessions keep everyone happy
Look Clean, light and airy, timeless Seasonal, documentary, city character

Why families love our Pilsen studio

Our studio is inside the Mana Contemporary arts building at 2233 S Throop St in Pilsen, with free on-site parking. It's an elevator building, stroller friendly, and pet friendly. It's bright and airy, with space for little ones to move, warm up, and be themselves. It's the most reliable choice for newborn, maternity, and family sessions from November through March.

When outdoor winter sessions shine

A fresh snowfall in Lincoln Park or the glow of the city at dusk can make for unforgettable images. Outdoor winter sessions work best when they're short and well planned, with warm layers and a backup date in case of extreme cold.

Tips for any winter session

  1. Schedule around naps and meals for little ones.

  2. Choose textured layers like knits, wool and corduroy.

  3. For outdoor sessions, bring gloves and hand warmers to use between shots.

  4. Have a flexible backup date in case weather changes plans.
